From Dr. Cowan: Dan Shen is one of the most well-studied and frequently used herbs in Chinese medicine. Its Latin name is Salvia Miltorrhiza, meaning “red sage,” which refers to the characteristic red roots of the plant. Unlike many traditional Chinese herbs, Dan Shen is often used alone rather than as part of a formula. Traditonally used to tonify the heart and relieve congestion, modern research indicates that it improves virtually all known risk factors for the development of heart disease, including LDL, Lp(a) (a type of lipid), CRP (an inflammation marker) and glucose tolerance[1]. Other studies have shown Dan Shen to be as effective as the prescription drug nitroglycerin in the treatment of cardiac angina.
