You've found a code, added everything to your basket, and the checkout says "this code is not valid". It's frustrating, but there's almost always a simple reason. Work through these nine checks.
1. It has expired
Most codes only work for a set period. Check the end date where you found the code. Codes from reputable sources say when they end.
2. There's a minimum spend
Many codes only work above a certain basket value, and some count the total before delivery or after other discounts. Check the terms, then check your basket total.
3. Some items are excluded
Sale items, gift cards, certain brands or whole categories are often excluded. The code may only apply to part of your basket, or not at all.
4. It's for new customers only
Welcome codes usually only work on a first order, and the shop checks your email address or account.
5. It's already been used
Many codes work once per customer. If you've used it before, even on a cancelled order, it may not work again.
6. It can't be combined
Most shops only allow one code per order, and some codes can't be used with items that are already reduced.
7. It was typed wrongly
Look-alike characters cause trouble: the number 0 and the letter O, or 1 and I. Copy and paste the code instead of typing it, and make sure there are no spaces before or after it.
8. It's in the wrong box
Some checkouts have separate boxes for voucher codes, gift cards and loyalty numbers. Make sure the code goes in the right one.
9. It's for a different country or app
A code may only work on the brand's site for your country, or only in its app. Check you're on the right version of the site.
Still not working?
Contact the shop's customer service before you pay. They can often tell you why, or apply the discount for you. If a code is from AdvantageLife's Deal Finder, the terms shown with the deal tell you the end date and any conditions.
The bottom line
Check the date, the minimum spend and the exclusions first: that solves most problems. And copy and paste, rather than type.
